Solidification processing of alloys in the pseudo-binary PbTe–Sb2Te3 system

چکیده
The effects of composition and cooling rate on the microstructures of alloys in the pseudo-binary PbTe–Sb2Te3 system were investigated as a first step towards the design of nanostructured materials with enhanced thermoelectric properties. Liquid alloys of three different compositions were cooled in three distinct ways: water quenching, air cooling and furnace cooling. The resultant structures and phases were examined by electron microscopy, electron microprobe chemical analysis and electron backscatter diffraction. The compound Pb2Sb6Te11 precipitated as a metastable phase (in conjunction with PbTe and/or Sb2Te3) under all conditions. Furthermore, whereas PbTe exhibited dendritic morphology, Sb2Te3 and Pb2Sb6Te11 crystallized as lamellar platelets with preferred (001) orientation. The range of cooling rates was from 1 to 26 K/s, while the characteristic microstructural feature size ranged from 10 to 35 lm for dendrites, and from 15 to 50 lm for lamella. The prospects for achieving nanoscale structure are discussed. 2006 Acta Materialia Inc. Published by Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Lattice thermal conductivity of self-assembled PbTe-Sb2Te3 composites with nanometer lamellae
In the system of PbTe and Sb2Te3, a metastable compound Pb2Sb6Te11 appears by solidification processing. It has been reported that heat treatments decomposes this compound into two immiscible thermoelectric materials forming nanosized lamellar structure. The fraction transformed and the interlamellar spacing was systematically investigated. In this work, the thermal conductivities and the elect...
متن کاملDevelopment and Evolution of Nanostructure in Bulk Thermoelectric Pb-Te-Sb Alloys
Motivated by reports of exceptionally high zT > 2 in thin film superlattices or ‘‘quantum well’’ materials with nanometer sized features, we have undertaken a study of composite materials with nanoscale features that promise to provide similar structures in bulk material. Nanometer scale layers of PbTe and Sb2Te3 with periodicities of 180 nm to 950 nm form when quenched eutectic PbTe-Sb2Te3 mel...
متن کاملEXPERIMENTALl ANALYSIS OF PARTITION COEFFICIENT IN Al-Mg ALLOYS
Because the partition coefficient is one of the most important parameters affecting microsegregation, the aim of this research is to experimentally analyse the partition coefficient in Al-Mg alloys. In order to experimentally measure the partition coefficient, a series of quenching experiments during solidification were carried out. For this purpose binary Al-Mg alloys containing 6.7 and 10.2 w...
متن کاملINFLUENCE OF THE PRIMARY SOLIDIFICATION ON THE SECONDARY SOLIDIFICATION DURING SEMISOLID METAL (SSM) PROCESSING OF A356.0 ALUMINUM ALLOY BY MECHANICAL STIRRING
Abstract: The aims of this research were to investigate the effects of semisolid metal (SSM) processing parameters (i.e., shear rates –times – temperatures combinations) on the primary solidification products and isothermal holding duration, subsequent to cessation of stirring on the secondary solidification of Al-Si (A356) alloy. The dendrite fragmentation was found to be the governing m...
متن کاملChemical composition tuning in quaternary p-type Pb-chalcogenides--a promising strategy for enhanced thermoelectric performance.
Recently a significant improvement in the thermoelectric performance of p-type ternary PbTe-PbSe and PbTe-PbS systems has been realized through alternating the electronic band structure and introducing nano-scale precipitates to bulk materials respectively. However, the quaternary system of PbTe-PbSe-PbS has received less attention. In the current work, we have excluded phase complexity by fabr...
